Couples Counseling in Frisco, TX

Most couples do not come to counseling after one bad week. They come after months of the same argument restarting from a different doorway, or after the arguing stopped and something quieter took its place. By the time a couple calls us, the pattern has usually outlasted every attempt to fix it on their own.

Couples counseling at our Frisco office gives that pattern somewhere to go. You and your partner sit down with a licensed clinician who pays attention to how the two of you talk to each other, not only to what each of you says happened, and who helps you interrupt the loop that keeps returning you to the same place.

Couples usually come to us when:

  • The same argument keeps restarting no matter how the last one ended
  • Trust has been broken and neither of you knows what repair is supposed to look like
  • You have become good roommates and lost most of the rest
  • One of you has been thinking about leaving and has not said it out loud
  • Money, sex, in-laws or parenting have quietly become undiscussable
  • A move, a new baby, a job change or a loss has knocked the two of you out of step
  • Nothing is on fire and you would like to keep it that way

What the work looks like

The first sessions are mostly about getting an accurate picture: what brought you in, what each of you is carrying into the room, and what the cycle between you actually is. Your clinician will then name that cycle out loud and give you both something specific to do differently, in session and between them. Being able to see the pattern as a thing the two of you are caught in, rather than as evidence about your partner's character, is often the turn.

Some couples come for a handful of sessions with one problem to solve. Others stay longer, particularly after a betrayal, or when one partner is also working through anxiety, depression, grief or trauma of their own. We will talk about pacing openly instead of leaving you to guess.

Individual sessions running alongside couples work are common and often useful. Several of our Frisco clinicians see partners both together and separately, and you can meet the Frisco team to read what each of them specializes in before you call.

Common questions

Do you take insurance for couples counseling?

Our clinicians are independently contracted with insurance companies and are in network with Aetna, Baylor Scott and White, Beacon Health/Value Options, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Healthsmart, Humana, Imagine Health, Tricare, UMR and United Healthcare, plus a number of EAP plans. How a given plan covers couples work specifically varies, so it is worth asking your insurer or emailing billing@blankslatetherapy.com before your first session. We can also accept FSA and HSA funds. The full list is on our payment options page.

What does a session cost?

Fees vary with the training and licensure of your clinician, and most insured clients are responsible for only a percentage of the fee. Call (214) 618-0588 and we will talk through the options that fit your budget rather than quoting you one number that may not apply.

Does my partner have to come to the first session?

It works better when you both come, because the thing being worked on lives between you. But a hesitant partner is a common starting point, and beginning on your own is a reasonable first move. Plenty of partners who would not agree to a first session will agree to a third.

Can we meet online instead of driving to Frisco?

Yes. We offer telehealth throughout Texas, and you and your partner can join from the same room or from two different ones, which is sometimes the only way a session happens in a week with two work schedules and a school pickup in it. Our telehealth page has the details.
